Dirk Koetter was fired from ASU yesterday.
I'm kind of glad, the whole Keller/Carpenter situation was just a mess and I'm sure that was one of the reasons for him being fired. I don't really care how "disconnected" a coach is from their team, my feeling is, you can't just publically announce "yes, I'm going with this guy" and then because 19 players come forward and then they "talk" and then say "oh I'm sorry, I changed my mind this person will now be my starting QB". As a coach, yes you can be "disconnected" from the team, but the last time I checked he was the coach.
I've coached (albeit not football) but I would have never decided to cut a person from the team because a select few came up to me and said "no we don't like this person". It doesn't work that way. As a coach you look out for the best interest of the whole team, not a select few. For me, team sports, are just that team, you have to learn to get along.
When you've got a team of probably around 100 (and I'm totally just guestimating the amount of players are on the team), taking the "word" of 19 players for the entire team, is just plain stupid, IMPO.
Mind you, what I'm saying is pretty much all the public has ever been told, so a lot of opinions have been formed, but the information about what "really happened behind the closed doors" hasn't been leaked. If more has come out, I don't know it unless A) it's on the news or B) in the cover page of the paper (I generally don't read the sports section).
