I think corporal punishment is a different subject. I would be totally against it except for in extreme cases. I think children are punished for being children enough as it is. Things mentioned in this thread are great examples.

Yes, there is a such thing of teachers disliking children. I have had several of them waaaaay before I became a troublemaker. It got so bad that I switched schools in fourth grade. There were things happening in the classroom, and the teachers did absolutely nothing about it. An example, there was a boy who was twice our size who liked to go around picking on girls. This guy only got in trouble only when certain girls complained. I was not one of them. My mother and grandmother complained about these teachers constantly, and the principal did nothing either. Eventually she said "there's an opening at so-and-so school, maybe your daugher would be more happy there".

There's no way I will trust some of these teachers with a friggin' paddle.
