Here's my (relatively) cheap thought.

Make up the nametags on the computer and print them (in color) on cardstock. Take them to Kinko's (or similar) and get the tags laminated. Then go to a craft store and buy pin backs and glue them on the tags.

Benefits:

Classier than paper stick-on
Much cheaper than the fabric kind.
You can make a different tag for each night, to go with the theme.
You can add information to the tag that can help with conversation. For example, offices held, activities on campus.
