I have already answered that question in this thread.

To add to my explanation, teenagers and young adults have a higher victimization rate for violent crimes and that has to do with their routine activities that are more conducive to victimization (as well as perpetrating certain offenses at a higher rate). So an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure until my child is 18 or older. Then he or she won't need an adult chaperone for such trips.
Not every college student goes on spring break with friends. But the difference is that these are 18+ year olds and they are now legally held accountable for their craziness (or lack thereof). Until my child is legally capable of living/being on his or her own and financially capable of paying for his or her own stuff, my opinion counts a whoooole helluva lot.
