Yeah, even if they thought he was telling the truth, you can't be convicted on confession alone. He needs to tell them things that "only the killer could know" or have his handwriting matched to the note, that sort of thing.
I do wonder if they're thinking that the parents could still have been involved and are wanting him to answer questions about that too.
