I am a Californian (native of San Diego, attended university and lived in Los Angeles for seven years). Mr. Young is accurate -- we have historically not owned many of the mom- and pop-style grocery stores in AfAm neighborhoods. Fortunately, we didn't have to patronize them because my family had cars and U.S. Navy commissary privileges.
I think people were surprised, though, because it came from civil rights leaderAndrew Young, not someone with a more radical public image. Mr. Young's recent public image is basically courtly, Talented Tenth and classy.
His working with Wally World, though, wasn't the best move, IMO.
