FarmHouse residents displaced after fire

"For most students, the last weekend of the summer is spent buying books, planning for classes and reveling in the last minutes of pre-class freedom. But for members of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's FarmHouse fraternity, the last days of summer were filled with evacuation, relocation and a fire in the attic.

Shortly before 2 on Saturday afternoon, while many of the members were away on a trip to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Mo., Lincoln Fire & Rescue Department personnel responded to a call at FarmHouse fraternity, 3601 Apple St., near UNL's East Campus.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which took more than three hours to put out, although one of the nearly 50 firefighters who responded to the call was treated for heat exhaustion.

Fire inspector Ken Hilger told fraternity members the fire, which has temporarily displaced 87 house residents, might have been started by an electrical malfunction caused by a lightning strike that occurred Friday night.

According to fraternity president Tyler Moore, the insulation in the ceiling may have been smoldering for hours but a cement barrier between the attic and the rest of the house prevented smoke from seeping into the actual living area."
