Then what would she call them? They are definitely Yankees to us. I don't care whether you're a soda yankee (Northeast) or a pop yankee (Midwest), you're still a Yankee.

Anyone from up North is a Yankee. Regardless of race. I'm surprised anyone said otherwise.
You hit the nail on the head with the friends thing. Hell, my boyfriend and I tease each other about our upbringings and we're both Southern (I'm a native Memphian; he's a native Cajun).
