Hi Sorors, Just wanted to add that I am also afraid of the water and I took swimming lessons last year at the Y also. I found out that one-on-one classes are usually also available for a few dollars more (like $2-3 more per lesson). Soror RD, I know that you already have a one-on-one by default, which is great, but I was really scared of being in a big class and my teacher not seeing me if I go under
so Soror Wonderful I signed up for the one-on-one. Also, he instructor informed me that there are various techniques that they are trained in to teach you that those who have not been trained in swimming instruction may not have in their bag of tricks. For this reason, an instructor other than your husband (assuming that he isn't trained in giving lessons) may be beneficial.
Either way, good luck Sorors with the swimming!! I still can't swim but at least I can put my head under water w/out losing it.

It may be best to learn from someone other than your husband. If I can suggest anything, I would suggest that you take group lessons. They are offered at the Y. When I got there, it was just me and the Soror that is teaching me. Even though it may seem cool to have the personal attention, there is nothing else to distract the instructor. When the focus is all on you, combined with the anxiety that you may already have, it makes you a little more nervous. Sometimes you just want to be left alone to figure it out. Once some other "students" got there, I was able to relax. I was no longer the only one who didn't know what I was doing. I was actually able to help them relax as well.
I am still between 3 and 4 feet. I am NOT NEARLY ready for deep water. I want to hyperventilate just thinking about it! LOL! I'll let you know how it goes!
