I've never had a problem with a moderator. If anything I think there are times when they might have stepped in sooner.
Someone (can't remember who) suggested I should be one, but I wasn't feeling particularly moderate at that time. It can be difficult.
As for SH80er, she was either inept when it came to understanding how to talk/relate to others, totally insensitive to the way her words affected, remarkably uninformed or simply trying to see how far she could push the envelope. (Point well taken that she did appologize, assuming that it was sincere.)
If it was one of the first three it's too bad -- but I have a feeling it was the last. I don't think we need that. Our conversations can be contentious enough without baiting each other.
Having said that, I would have been OK with taking James' advice about just cooling off.
