You're going to have some stiff competition with the outsourced contractors. A lot of companies find it cheaper to send programming jobs to India than to hire people.
If you are going for a certification - forget about it. Everyone and their mom can get one so unless you're going for a higher degree beyond masters I dont think itd be worth your time.
Like sdbeta says - Software Engineering and Analyst jobs are in higher demand because those are jobs that require on site professionals and cant necessarily be shipped overseas.
