"Showbiz" people do or don't have their contracts renewed on all levels with a fair amount of regularity.
In the end, that's a business decision that may have to do with ratings, salary or sometimes personality. We appear to have, if nothing else, a huge clash of egos in this case.
It may well be that hiring Rosie (I'm not a fan of either one) was done in hopes that the verbal fireworks between her and Star would add some spice to the show. Who knows except the ABC Execs.
If the ABC Brass indeed told Star months ago that her deal would not be renewed, it sounds like there was at least some degree of professionalism on their part. It also appears that they were hoping that her departure could be handled in a way that was the least embarassing to her or the show and network. In any event, not renewing a contract is not generally considered "shyting" on someone -- it's a fact of life in the entertainment (and, yes, even the news) business.
