This is probably an abnormal thing to do, but I'm really paranoid of being robbed or burglarized.

I don't keep my real jewelry, my badges, and my sentimental pieces in a regular jewelry box on top of a dresser or vanity.

I keep those in a jewelry roll-up bag or box (for earrings & rings) and have it hidden in my apartment. While it is still possible for thieves to find it, it's not as obvious so if they are in a hurry the chances that they find it are slimmer.
