They say that this is the cause of fires at the pump. I believe that when people (esp. rocking the wool coats, like we do up north) get back into the car, then they tend to build up static, which can cause sparks to ignite any gas or fumes that they may come into contact with. Getting back in the car was heavily discouraged just a little while back when there were several incidents involving gas tanks catching fire.
Also, like I said earlier, some old people may not know how to set the latch to 'get it started'.
