In my context, there are some real transmogrifications of "traditions" that go agsinst the spirit of fraternity and the things we hold dear, and moreover, made up stuff that is on offer now. This is a real issue where things that have been passed down for generations, not for a few years or for even of those of my generation, are being forgotten or pushed to the side. Like I said traditions are fluid; but what is alarming is that much of what I'm referring to is not positive and leading towards upholding real fraternal and human values. I'm speaking in my context where this is a hotly debated issue, where I do see the arrogance and lack of humility by those who, by virtue of their life and fraternal experience, aren't in a real position to "adjudicate" such matters. It's not so much about ego as about the future of the organization. One such E-mail was sent out recently by a former Grand officer who had a similar concerns.
I hear ya but:

1) a lot of this comes from older members
and/or
2) older members are conveniently unavailable to teach but available to chastise
or
3) older members turn a blind eye when certain behaviors need to be corrected before they become ingrained in the culture and passed down further

I have seen members who have been in 20 to 40+ years who have encouraged and passed down some negative aspects of particular organizations or are condoning when younger members display them. These same people would appear to be respectable as they sit in alumnae and grad chapter meetings--they even pretend to have strong opinions against certain things that they condone behind closed doors. People know what they do but excuse it by saying "so and so is old school and that's how he/she got down back in the day." It's okay for these people to be this way but younger members catch the heat for (generally) doing what they were taught to do or following the culture that they observed as aspirants.
