I have read this entire thread and not nary a person mentioned, "The Hustler's Wife" by Nikki Turner. The story was pretty good, but when you're writing a book and describing a certain time period (e.g. the 80's), it would behoove you to know what fashions were out then and what kind of cars and accessories are in style at that time. You can base a part of the book in the 80's and talk about a car with "dubs" or a character wearing a Coogi dress to the club. Come on now.
I took a publishing class and when it came to learning about copy editing, my professor asked the class to talk about a book that each of us had read in the past and what we liked or disliked about it. THIS was at the top of my list of dislikes, and one of my female classmates agreed with me.
