Well.....two of my sisters are RA's and here's what I can see:
They like it because they get to be close with people other than the ones in the house, but they aren't around here much. So it's pretty much just what you were saying, it is a good experience, but it takes away a lot of free time you might have otherwise spent with your fraternity.
