I never studied etymology but when I taught the last few years, I did teach my students certain Latin and Greek roots to help them with SAT and ACT verbal. We never had Latin in high school as an option.
And no I have never taken or studied for the GRE.
ETA: Oh and I failed to mention I was in spelling bees from 2nd - 8th grade.
I won in 4th grade and took 2nd in the 8th grade.
