I dated this one guy in high school who had relatives from the south. During one family dinner, mom was serving cantelope, and grandma asked me if I would like some salt with it. I was horrified at the though and I fear I may have been a little rude, but really I was just shocked at the idea.
Now, I did have a watermelon-goat cheese-balsamic vinegar salad in Boston a few years ago that was SO good. I've since served goat cheese on watermelon squares at a few parties. People always freak out at first, but then they love it once they try them!
