That's the rule I know from growing up, and both Amy & Emily agree in their books. It applies to linen, seersucker, white, and straw accessories.

I have this tidbit from Serial Mom in my Facebook profile:

Juror #8: That's not true anymore.
Beverly Sutphin: Yes it is! Didn't your mother tell you?
