Because it's pretty.
And in my hometown, there hasn't been a tornado since statehood. Everytown all around us, yes, but not us. It's because of the bend in the river and the fact that we're in a valley, so the typical path of a tornado will cause it to leave the ground and not touch back down until out of town. If a tornado came from a different direction, we very well could have massive destruction. Though the urban legend as to why is because there is an indian burial ground.
