Why are the letters tacky? Just because they're big? In that case, any shirt with a logo or design that takes up the whole shirt is tacky. Is there another reason?
I can see how if you sat way in the back the professor wouldn't be able to read the words spelled out on your shirt. But if you sit in the back all the time, the prof probably doesn't think very highly of you anyway.
