Both my parents were college-educated, one of them working in the corporate business world and the other working at a hospital. Soon as they came here, their degrees were no longer valid  Same thing happened to my aunt who was a doctor in Saudi Arabia.

I'm aware that if you went to medical school and practiced outside of the United States you have to pass certain standarized exams such as the USMLE. If you can pass those exams, you can practice medicine or at least apply for the U.S residency match program. I know several doctors who were able to do so. Perhaps in a post 9/11 world those requirements have changed.
