Let me say that the members of the 4 NPHC Sororities are, before anything else, human. We get upset and angry. We disagree with each other on certain issues. We get in heated debates and sometimes are not all that sisterly. We can get carried away with our emotions. Does this excuse us for not being aware of how we treat each other? No, not anymore than it excuses you of doing the same.
None of us have been in our respective Sorority since birth, and some are still getting used to the sisterhood idea. Not all of us come from campuses where all 4 Sororities are represented so all we have to go on is what we hear and the stereotypes. Is this right? Of course not, but it's reality and something we as Greeks should be dealing with and making a conscious effort to change.
We have our rivalries, they've been there since the beginning and we can do nothing about that. What we can control is how much we buy into them. It would be stupid of me to say I dislike a woman or to trash her just because she's an AKA or Zeta or SGRho. Just because her choice for her lifetime commitiment is different from mine is no reason for me to deny her an opportunity for us to be friends and it's certainly no reason for me to be uncivil with her.
Unfortunately, not everyone sees this as I do. Some still walking around, even though they haven't been a neo in years, in their "neo glow" and they see everything through salmon pink and apple green OR crimson and cream OR royal blue and pure white OR rhoyal blue and gold tinted glasses. They fail to realize there's more to the world than just their organization and they are losing out on a lot because of it. Do not mistake me, I am all for being proud of your respective organization. I just think it's a little hypocritical for someone to put me down today because I'm a Delta, then go out and do community service tomorrow.
