I got myself an iPod mini (4GB) about a year and a half ago. I've read user feedback indicating that they are fragile, so I bought a case at the same time. I've never had a problem (knock on wood).
I got an iPod nano as a birthday gift for my husband a few months ago. Got the free engraving.
I think his unit only holds 1GB, but he's never complained - it's plenty of room if you manage your playlists and podcasts right.
If you're in school, definitely go for the educational discount.
Apple ships via Fedex, signature required at time of delivery, so be sure to have your iPod delivered somewhere someone can sign for it. Apple does NOT warn you of this when you place your order. I got burned by this...
