If your school library supports online databases like Lexis-Nexis, I'd say go for those. They have a lot of periodicals that have academic research, usually back 10-15 years. It may be current scholarship you're looking for, it may not be. My school uses Lexis-Nexis and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. I spend minutes researching a topic, whereas it used to take hours.

I wouldn't use the internet for anything other than very very broad background (ie, encyclopedic information).
