Thurgood Marshall proposed as Episcopal Church saint
Fellow parishioners of the late Supreme Court Justice and civil-rights activist Thurgood Marshall are asking that Marshall be considered a saint in the Episcopal Church.
His candidacy is being advanced by, among others, Cissy Marshall, Thurgood Marshall's wife, and the Rev. William Pregnall of St. Augustine's Church in Washington.
If the grass-roots proposal is approved - a process that takes years - Marshall will be added to the church's Book of Lesser Feasts and Fasts, one of three primary worship texts.
Marshall began attending St. Augustine's in 1965, when he came to Washington to serve as the first black U.S. solicitor general, under President Lyndon Johnson. Johnson nominated Marshall as the first black Supreme Court justice in 1967.
