I don't think it hurts to show you've taken a proactive interest and done your homework. One way to do this is with recs. Another way is to slip it into conversation-- shows you are taking the process seriously and are interested.
Better to phrase it along the lines of :
I'm so excited to be at recruitment. I love that your mascot is a ______. I love _______, too! I did some research before recruitment started and I learned that your philanthropy is X. I volunteered at X in my hometown for two summers! What are some of the ways in which the sorority supports X?
Something like that, anyway.
