This is getting fun.
For one, I'm from GA, and would never think that OU is Oglethorpe University. However, I actually watch college football, which is probably why we immediately thought Oklahoma, and Sigmachiguy was confused.
Now as to our friend Sigmachiguy, I dont really wanna get into his signature or whatever, he can think what he would like to, and personal attacks don't really disturb me. However, from what I ascertain from his posts, it seems that his ideal greek life is that which:
-Has no standards for bidding. Why shouldnt everyone get a bid, after all, we're not interested in being a traditional fraternity, just a microcosm of the campus.
-Allows pledges into their brotherhood without being tested. I'm sorry, but my house isn't open to everyone. We've worked hard to build it to what it is, and so have those who've come before us. Why now would we want to let any random person be initiated, without making them overcome obstacles. I've never advocated striking a pledge, or making them drink, etc...However, I don't see how lining them up and questioning them about their responsibilities in front of one another is a bad thing. Maybe you're not one who cares for responsibility and accountability, but we do here.
-Ignores the role of common ideals, religion, etc...when considering membership. I am not one who buys into the idea of diversity for diversity's sake. I like meeting people from other places, I like seeing how other people from all walks of life live, but that is not the role of a fraternity. I live here, these are my best friends, and we all share essential goals, faith, and interests. Most people wouldnt choose a roommate who is completely different from them, why would I want to fill my fraternity with such.
That being said, if that is what greek life is to you, I'm glad you found something you enjoy. I'll personally will stick to the south.
