One of the jobs I applied to wanted writing samples, and I had the same situation - a huge body of work from college, which I didn't feel reflected my abilities now very well.

I ended up using something from my current job, but sanitized - all details edited out. They reviewed it at the interview, but my overall impression was that they wanted me to be able to come up with something - i.e. be able to prove I had writing experience, and it was recent. Going in, I had anticipated them carefully picking apart the example... but they barely glanced at it.
