Like anything else, it depends on the school. When I was in school at Iowa State, there was one player who I knew was an AGR. He got decent playing time, especially his senior year, and was still fairly active in his fraternity. Otherwise, it was fairly rare.
My husband went to a small DIII school and started both football and track and was an active ATO all four years. For a while, there were quite a few ATOs on the football team, but I think that's since changed (mostly because the school is a big enginerd school and is doing what it can to try and kill the athletics program.)
