I think it's probably a combination of the coaches discouraging pledging and the fraternities themselves asking more from their members. No more "you're a good image for us cause you're the starting quarterback so you can blow off meetings" etc. Which, IMO, is a good thing. Not saying that is always the case, if you can give your best to both that's all good.

I would agree with this. At IU, the last big-name male athletes I remember going Greek were Alan Henderson and Chris Reynolds, who both were KAPsis. Actually I think Luke Recker joined a fraternity before he transferred but I can't remember which one.
Of late, I've heard about more female varsity athletes at IU going Greek than males.
