Tallahassee doesn't really have a nickname but its name comes from the Appalachee Indian word meaning "old fields". The County is Leon named after the French explorer Ponce De Leon.

It was chosen as the capital city of Florida because it set midway between the population centers of Florida where were Pensacola and St. Augustine at the time. If you know anything about Florida you now how funny that sounds now that P-Cola and St. Augustine were once the population centers of Florida.

I was born and raised in Jacksonville and ofcourse it was named after that murdering. raping, slave owning, Indian exterminator also known as President Andrew Jackson.
