Sometimes, we must come in contact with people we normally would avoid. A person who can interact with others and make them feel comfortable is considered "polished". With each passage, from learning to share your crayons to being placed on a team, group project or committee, we have to learn to "play nice". We do this in order to acomplish our goals. Sometimes it works out and you find a new friend that you NEVER would have imagined. Other times, you dread it-gripe about it-complete it-and move on.
Then, there are the others. Those who will use you to achieve THEIR goals. They are two-faced & would have everyone LOVE them, while they privately make fun of others who, for lack of experience or status backing, don't have the "tools" to defend themselves.
THE GREATEST MOST OBVIOUS EXAMPLE COMES WHEN THE STUDENT BODY VOTES FOR HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING COURT!
I would laugh and laugh when all of a sudden glittering teeth in mile wide smiles turned on their "HI! (giggle-giggle) HI!" buttons...Now, EVERYONE was their friend.
You've heard the expression "There IS life after HS." Honey, there IS life after college as well. However, some things will never change. In business, you come in contact with ALL SORTS OF JERKS. If you have children, then you REALLY have to deal with some people you can't stand, but you will do it (and nicely) for your children. Just help them recognize the difference so they can defend themselves or avoid turning into such a "user".
Remember- "An aquaintance likes you BECAUSE, a friend loves you IN SPITE OF."
