I attend a very liberal church that is also the co-seat of our archdiocese, and they unequivocally will state the death penalty is wrong - it's not our will to decide who lives and who dies (also the argument used for abortion) and it is also unequally applied to non-wealthy non-whites, thus violating the social justice polices of the Church.

I heard the same argument at my very conservative parish where I grew up.
