Pro-life has to do with the dignity of all human life, even that which has yet to be born (how something can one minute NOT be human life and the next minute BE human life is beyond me - a pregnant women will not be giving birth to a puppy!). The death penalty has to do with social justice - and should only be used as a last resort for the protection of society, but is still an option.

There are 3 different words for kill, death, and murder in the Old Testament. That is why many religious people are willing to accept both.
I thought Catholics were opposed to both though?
