Many times, High Rho IS a forgotten office. A typical scenario is when an accounting major vies for High Tau, doesn't get the job and says he'll do the Rho's job just so he can say he's doing something to help the chapter.

The problem w/this idea is that they can sometimes have an attitude because they didn't get their #1 choice office and phone in their efforts. One way to keep the Rho office from being thought of as a "PITA" (pain in the...) job is to have the alumni make an appearance when the chapter is holding their nominating meeting.

It's not a 100% guarantee that you'll get a responsible UG that wants to help the alums out, but we've been doing this @ one of the chapters I work with for the last few years & it's helped. I have dinner @ the house the night of the meeting & then get a few minutes before their usual business items to make a short speech.

The talk usually centers on the fact that this is a unique position. Most offices are just one-year programs, but the Rho is working in the future consistently because THE ALUMS ARE ALWAYS GONNA BE AROUND. In effect, it's a 5-year plan (no comments about Stalin, okay?).

Another selling point is that the chapter members will (God willing and the creek don't rise) eventually going to be alums themselves. It's sort of a sneak preview into their future, and a great way to become known for mentoring possibilities.

The results after these talks have been encouraging. Before we started the shpiels, we'd have a good Rho, then a bad Rho, then perhaps an indifferent Rho. Frustrating...but now things are good.

When I reflect on the relationships I've had w/chapter members over the last few years, the only men I can actually say I've known are the officers. I may meet members when visiting for Homecoming/Founders Day, but the names/faces that stay w/me are the HZ guys.

I've got other ideas re: this thread, but I've gotta take stuff off of my office table so we can use it for Christmas dinner. Next...et Joyeux Noel.
