I try to go by this rule too. Although I am guilty of keeping a backup generic gift around my house in case I need one in a hurry. (Currently it's a bath bucket with soaps and poufs etc in it).

At my wedding I got one of those "Thunder Stick" mixers/blenders from someone...and when I unwrapped it, it had pieces of Christmas paper still stuck to it...
