Yeah you can't make groups for people outside your school to join. They ought to to that.
Facebook is pretty cut-and-dried...you can see profiles of people who attend your school (unless they fixed it so only their friends can), people who are your friends, or if your Geography is the same (I can see profiles of people who may have gone to another school but indicated Atlanta as their Geo).
They also have the photo thing now...so if you tag somebody on pics you can add them as your friends.
Poking...that's a feature on there that doesn't have a purpose...I get random dudes poking me
