I only know the "official" rule for mascara, and that's 3 to 6 months (supposedly)...
But I've found that base seems to separate after a couple years or so (or, in the case of Bobbe Brown, about 6 months so you better use that stuff like crazy). Eyeshadows will go for a couple years, just watch for crumbliness because that's a sign that they need to be tossed. Lipstick will last a couple years, too. Liquid eyeshadows seem to last a little less time than powder eyeshadows, because after a while they start to sort of separate like foundation does. What did I leave out?
Edited to add: If I can't remember a general time frame I bought it in and it looks like it's seen better days, I get rid of it.
