Were American forces welcomed? According to all reports, both media and anecdotal, the overwhelming majority of Iraqis welcomed American forces.
Was there violence mixed into this welcome? Yes. So it was not a peaceful welcome.
The diction could have been better, but I don't see this as being somehow glib regarding American troops.
