I think I may know too much about awards shows but here it goes...
There were three reasons why the AMAs moved to November from the end of January.
1)Is the situation that Fun4real mentioned. The folks over the Grammys told artists that if they performed at the AMAs, forget about performing at the Grammys. It came to a head a few years ago when both tried to get Michael Jackson to perform. Dick Clark got mad because he felt that artists should perform at both awards and that the people should get to see their favorite artists as much as possible. BTW, Michael showed up at the AMAs but didn't perform.
2) The shift in awards season. The Oscars are now earlier than they have traditonally been, so a lot of awards shows (both Grammys and AMAs) changed their times.
3) Lower ratings. They felt that if they moved it to November sweeps, more people would watch. That hasn't been the case, especally with most artists not even showing up.
Like I said previously, Dick Clark really needs to give it up. It was good when it was just them and the Grammys but now with so many award show there's not much of a need for it anymore.
BTW, the Grammys (in my opinion) have gotten a whole lot better!
