As for calling out James, I am sure in his post he gave you the answer that mosts fits the situation. But I don't think it's a point of being sensitive, I think it's just how one conducts his or herself

Well, from reading Tom's email it appeared that something had been discussed between the mods and/or other GC members. Maybe I'm wrong.
I do think that sensitivity does play a factor. In general I am a pretty light hearted and easy going person. I mean less than 5% of the things that I post should be taken seriously. Sometimes I fool myself into thinking that everyone else is like that also. If it wasn't a factor, I don't think that 75% of GC would want to skin me alive, they'll be like "whatever" instead.
