I think the rivalaries mentioned, maybe with one or two exceptions were friendly. Rivarlies, not just Greek ones, serve many purposes. One is that friendly competetion feels good, and is healthy, if one doesn't get too involved in it. It can also lead to creative things like seeing who can get the most money for charity. As far as rush, maybe who can bring the most good guys into the greek world. That way you win if you win, but if you loose, everybody wins overall cuz you just did a really good thing.
