Living so close to one another is not a big problem I don't think. I think fraternities at Miami are very segregated -- you don't usually see a lot of chapters working closely with each other like I've heard at other schools. That's just what people who have visited here have said. I think a lot are indifferent towards each other -- we don't really have a problem with the majority of fraternities nearby, and there are 8 within a 1 minute walking distance.
At our Greek Convocation, the keynote speaker had said that at the school he works with (forget where), you could walk into a fraternity house and it wouldn't be unusual to see a group of guys studying from a handful of different chapters. Here it isn't very common in my opinion.
Sororities are closer than fraternities here I think because they are not allowed to have houses. Having a house can make you feel like you have your own territory, and you "defend" that territory and might not feel comfortable at another house. I guess it depends on the individual though.
