MIMI’S EMANCIPATION CELEBRATION
Mariah Carey was honored as Artist of the Year during a violence-free Vibe Awards ceremony taped this weekend (November 12) in Culver City, CA. In recognition of the success of her album, The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey also collected Album of the Year, Best R&B Voice of the Year and Best R&B Song (for “We Belong Together”)
Although last year’s event was blemished by an audience member who assaulted Dr. Dre and, subsequently, was allegedly stabbed by Young Buck, this year’s award show was virtually drama-free. Even The Game refrained from inciting beef. Well, almost—he showed up with “G-Unot” shaved in his head. But it went ignored, as neither 50 Cent, Dr. Dre nor Young Buck showed.
There was, however, one moment of possible tension when Mary J. Blige, winner of the VLegend award, hinted at not liking the picture that Vibe Magazine used for the cover of their November issue during her acceptance speech.
Other winners of the night included The Diplomats for Best Group, T.I. for Best Street Anthem (“U Don’t Know Me”), R. Kelly for Reelest Video (“Trapped in the Closet”) and Kanye West for Best Rapper. The show, hosted by “Girlfriends” co-star Tracy Ellis Ross, will air this Tuesday, November 15, and feature performances by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Paul Wall, Lil’ Wayne, David Banner and others.
B5 CONCERT BUM RUSHED
Four people were taken to the hospital after suffering injuries during a B5 concert this past Saturday (November 12), NBC reported. The free radio-sponsored performance at Brookdale Center Mall in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota was interrupted when members of the audience rushed the stage, causing chaos and minor injuries.
Witnesses say that two members of B5 were tackled and overwhelmed with kisses while the others were being stripped of their clothing and jewelry. It took approximately 70 police officers 45 minutes to restore order and clear the mall of the reported 2,000 fans who showed. No arrests were made, according to wcco.com.
The five member boy band from Atlanta consists of brothers Dustin, Patrick, Kelly, Bryan and Carnell Breeding, who’s ages range from 10 to 17. The Bad Boy group was discovered by Diddy himself.
IRV AND CHRIS GOTTI’S TRIAL TRIBULATIONS
The trial for Irv "Gotti" and Chris “Gotti” Lorenzo has been postponed again, according to a spokesman. This time, only for a day though. Originally set to commence November 14, the trial had been delayed for a day to allow time for the defense to review new evidence that was presented by the Federal government. According to reports, these new documents prove that The Inc. habitually purchased plane tickets and hotel rooms using fictitious names.
The brothers are accused of laundering money through their label from childhood friend and infamous drug lord, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff.
Despite the legal woes, however, Inc. artists remain hard at work. Ashanti recently shot a video for the lead single off new remix album, Collectibles by Ashanti. The song, “Still On It,” (featuring Method Man and Paul Wall) is one of three new songs included in her compilation of remixes. Meanwhile, Ja Rule will be releasing a greatest hits album and is currently in Miami shooting a guest appearance role for one of UPN’s network programs, said the spokesman. Both albums are due in-stores December 6.
JAGGED EDGE BACK FOR THE FIFTH TIME
Jagged Edge is preparing to release their fifth and self-titled album this December 20, according to a statement. Though the lead single, “So Amazing” features reggaeton artist Voltio, and production by fellow A-Town rep, Jermaine Dupri, Jagged Edge has a few other guest appearances that’ll help move units for them. For one, there’s John Legend on “Season’s Change” for the grown and sexy crowd, and then there’s Big Duke of Boyz N Da Hood on “Sexy American Girls” for the hip-hop fanatics.
“I'm proud of all of the albums we've done,” group-member Brian Casey says in a statement, “but this time we stepped out on our own and fine tuned things without a lot of outside help, did the majority of the work.” Brian and his twin, Brandon executive produced the album as well as produced tracks for it.
DESTINY’S CHILD READIES ANOTHER “GOODBYE”
Destiny’s Child will reunite November 15 on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to perform yet another “farewell,” according to a release. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who will host the historic show, announced that the trio will be the only guests to appear that night and he will do everything in his power to keep the group together “for the good of the world.”
