Having been in the military over 20 years ago (I was in the Air Force), I usually tell people who ask me about it the following:

Basic training is a head game. Work as a team and don't do or say anything that makes you stand out in the crowd. As a trainee, you will be shit on by the permanent party (those who have already completed training); it doesn't stop after you graduate basic. The advice many have already given on this thread is very helpful... take heed.

As a member of the military, you're under a separate justice system than that of civilians.Things that otherwise would be thought of as a 'no big deal' in civilian life can have severe repercussions to your term of military service or career, if you stick with it longer than your initial enlistment. Getting court-martialed is a federal offense, and in some cases it's just as bad as getting a felony conviction. DUIs and drug use are practically a career killer, especially if you are an officer.
