Best costume I saw that required no explanation: Carmen Sandiego.
Best costume I saw that required explanation: "A hobo from the future!" He had a credit card reader attached to his arm and kept asking, "Can you spare a quarter? I take credit cards!" There were some other hilarious aspects to his costume, plus hobo-style clothes in metallic colors. I laughed so hard. It's definitely a costume that would require you to stay "in character" all night though.
