Betty did not lock the door well when she left. Again, he took the opportunity to escape. But, while heading up the stairs, he overheard Matt inform Betty that the police would come after HER if anyone found out. At that point, he turned around and went back down into the basement.

I thought he went back in the basement when he heard he would be executed. I don't recall Matt saying they would come after Betty. I'll have to watch that part again.
