A K-8 principal explained to me that in the current school of thought (no pun intended!) -- keeping kids in the elementary setting through grade 8 helps their behavior and test scores -- as well as the transition to high school.

Junior high and middle school have the same curriculum-- apples to apples. "Middle" sounds less threatening than "junior high." Somewhere along the way, new junior high schools were called middle schools... and the older junior highs kept the name.
